What are the compile times like for fluxbox (and what libraries does it require) the best thing about xfce4 is that on a virgin pro install it still only takes about 3 hours to compile.
***** edit
thought I would answer my own question I compiled fluxbox at work this was on a dual 677 PIII xeon with 640MB RAM so I reckon the xbox would probably be about 4-5x slower but it only took 10 minutes so I would expect under an hour on the xbox.
Also the up to date version of fluxbox is marked unstable on portage

Yes. Fluxbox .96 (the "unstable" development version, which is perfectly good), is much much better than .1.4, the "stable" version. And yes, the compile time is very fast. However, it would be nice to have one already installed with some nice slit apps, a good menu (maybe even the exact same one as KDE uses).

I agree with shallax, from the few I have tried xfce4 is the best alternative to kde and the two are plenty to include.
However what I thought might be nice is if several window managers were made available through magic (unconfigured of course) so you could run magic and it would say
Would you like to install a window manager?
Which window manager would you like?
Then it could display a list to choose from the script would then simply emerge the window manager and make the necessary alterations to .xinitrc
Probably a crap idea but there it is.

Ow. I have feelings. Words can hurt people, too.ShALLaX wrote:What about "no"
Fine, then. I'll just
Code: Select all
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge fluxbox

nobspangle, I was actually considering doing something similar to that.. well.. more like I was considering adding Gnome. Right now, Gentoox development is hectic... I have magic in pieces and im trying to put it back together and test it
Im also thinking that KDE and XFCE offer plenty enough choice *shrugs*. If a user wants their own special WM, then they can emerge it themselves

I reckon you're probably right about the WM all the one's I've tried bar xfce4 have been pretty crap in terms of their usability, If you distribute them through magic it's almost as if you are endorsing their quality you'd also have to offer some sort of support for their configuration as well, I now say leave them out.
If it'll help you on your way I ran through magic this week and installed everything except KDE without any problems. (This probably no help because you need to know about problems not successes).

Heheh, and the fact Im still changing magic right now means im probably adding more bugs . But yeah, as odd as it may sound, I prefer to find things that go wrong --- it doesnt feel right when everything works because you know you MUST be missing some small detail

distcc
I would like to see distcc included. as it is a pain to compile all of the dependecies. also Shallax it would cut down on your building of new releases as it distributes compiling for most packages.
