Cobalt Qube

Post by BigBowser »

Hi Shallax, it's me again

I saw that you've got a Qube2 and I'd like to know where you bought it? (I searched on Sun's homepage but I found only specifications..)

Thanks,

They dont make them anymore (havent done so for years)... you'll have to get them second hand.

I'm also starting to think it wasn't such a good buy - the drivers for the network adaptors (tulip) suck, you cant get more than 1.5MBps through them and they keep locking up.

Ook :?
I forget the idea.. Wasn't Cobalt sufficient? (yea I knew that all people from SunOS migrate to Linux but even on routers? )

I saw that these drivers aren't in devel because of montains of versions of 2.4 and 2.6 kernel.. But as Sun did, you can use 2.2 kernel, if you didn't alrealy do that.

ebay.com would be the most common place to find a Qube2/Raq2.

@Shallax, What kernel version are you running, ive heard a few different kernel versions work with no hangups in the tulip driver (although I havent tested this yet, my raq2 is still in the mail :\

As I said, on their official support, Tulip drivers are known to work very well only with 2.2 kernel.. a big jump in the past

Well, 2.4 seems to be running better. I can get 2.5MBps though the NIC compared to 2.6 which only allowed about 1.5MBps. I'll see how it holds up for stability now.

Doesn't look promising - I keep getting corrupt downloads.

I have a horrible feeling I'm going to have to buy a "commercial" router.

maybe it only craps out when you use both bulit in NIC's? Perhaps use one onboard NIC and slap one in the PCI slot to help fix the issue if you wanna stray away from the commercial routers?

[EDIT: should prolly post the link]

I thought of that, but dont have the money to test out the theory.

The good news, however, is that its been running for about 2 days with 2.4.24-pre2 with no lockups so far!

What patches did you apply to 2.4.24-pre2?

Both those from CoLo site? None? Inquiring minds want to know :D

Just the 2.4.24 patches.

The thing has locked up twice on me since (over the past 6 days). As a last resort I'm going to try and go back to the original Cobalt OS. If that doesn't work or doesn't suit me its bye-bye time for Mr Qube.

http://groups.google.com/group/linux.de ... d5c15f0674

some report no probs with 2.4.27-r5k-cobalt 2.4.27-8.040815-1 (same as 2.4.27-8?) but problems with 2.4.27-10*

and even a patches for 2.4.31 at
http://www.twistedslinky.org/~link/
http://groups.google.com/group/linux.de ... 318a7c805e

tho cant find if they are talking 1nic or 2

[EDIT]
Meh, maybe 2 on board NIC's just wont fly

http://lists.debian.org/debian-mips/200 ... 00033.html

although i cant begin to understand what they mean by editing the patches of which they speak

Paypal link has always been on the main gentoox website. I dont think I'll risk the PCI NIC, though - I'd rather just get a commercial router now... one that I can rely on. Any donations from now will go towards that (unless someone wants to find me another tiny linux-capable box with two integrated NICs).

Thanks!
