you dont need a modchip, just use the loader.xbe (gentoox.xbe) to run linux, else you would have to flash the loader.bin to something. As far as component, you might have more problems with a 1.6 then any other box, checkout the manual and faq's on the main page http://gentoox.shallax.com

i would assume so, it wont hurt to try, if it works, you will see what is going on, if not, login via ssh, shutdown the machine, swap cables and try again

you don't need a modchip as such but you do need an xbox that can run unsigned code, (either a modchip, tsop flash or software exploit).

You can use any kind of cable, with the following limitations.

If you use component cables you cannot use 480i
The only HDTV mode you can get on a 1.6 xbox is 480p

You may also have problems with s-video on a 1.6 box I'm not sure.

On a side note component cables are the ones that come in a set of three carrying luminance, and the two colour difference signals on seperate cables, they are usually used for HDTV.
This is different to RGB cables which are usually only found on european scart sockets and have five cables one each carrying the red, green and blue signals and the horizontal and vertical sync signals.
It is totally different to a composite cable which carries both chroma and lumiance on the same cable.
If you keep an open mind, will your brain fall out?

you can do two kinds of installs, FTP or CD

checkout the guides for:

ftp:
http://gentoox.shallax.com/modules.php? ... e&artid=59

i havent done cd install in a while, although i think it is along the lines of burning your Home or Pro version to cd, running the loader.xbe and going through the install http://gentoox.shallax.com has all the files you will need

Hi,

do you really love to break your xbox and make it a paper weight. If you dont then dont do anything with your xbox.

You are not only new, but you havent read anything before you asked all these questions.

http://www.google.com is a good place, type FTP and hit search. You will know what ftp is. Also go to http://www.xbox-scene.com and read up tutorials there. Go to http://www.xbox-linux.org and take the questionaire on why you need linux on your xbox. If you want the meaning of linux, http://www.google.com is a good place to start. There are tutorials on gentoox website, but you can get to that after you have finished all the above sites.

You would also have to know more about your xbox. like what version it is and whether you have done anything on it other than play games and/or dvds.

Note: Dont try anything on your xbox till you actually understand what you are trying to do with your xbox.
hope that helps,

Hi,

thats good that you know about ftp and linux.

so then my question to you.

Have you modded your xbox in anyways. If you havent you would have to go back to xbox-scene.com.

From your prev note you didnt know how to ftp into your xbox, that would mean that you havent done any kinds of mod. :)

no sirr, no mods what so ever, from what i've been looking at, this process seems a thousand times easier if i get my xbox modded. I don't really want to spend money on getting a modchip and getting it installed. I know there's a way to get evox onto my xbox without mod chip, could anyone point me in a direction though. I"m not too sure, but i think "hotswapping" is the way to do it?

Hi,

its called softmodding. look it up on http://www.xbox-scene.com. Thats the best place to discuss that.

But again. what exactly are you planning to do by installing gentoox on your xbox. Its a pretty exciting thing to mod your xbox and all, but its a long process and all I can tell you is if your lucky it will get it all right the first time and you would be happiest person on these forums, but if you get stuck then you could get frustrated and angry and would wonder why you even started.

1. the normal stock xbox hdd is only 8G size and gentoox takes up most of the space on E (4G).
2. if something fails on your softmod and if your xbox is still fixable you would have to get it modded with a chip that would put you a bill of 60bucks (avg). There are lots of stuff that you can get about these things on http://www.xbox-scene.com. :) Will see you there..

well, why gentoox on my xbox? mostly because my xbox is just sitting around, I got it last yearr, and only have a few games so far, usually i only use it for parties and when people are over. I just thought that it would be nice if i could make it more useful, ya know.

I understand how it can be frustrating to mod the box, but heh, i'm pretty patient.

If i can successfully mod my xbox, then i think i might put a new hdd, but before that, how do you suggest i mod it? I want to do the hotswap way, but i'm just afraid that i could solder the two points wrong, and that would just suck balls.

Actually, i think i'll just do the mechassault "gamesave" exploit, (I think that's what its called). Just a question though, if i use a usb stick to transfer the gamesave, will i be able to use the memory stick again, cause i read how you have to get the xbox to format the stick first, can anyone help/
