Different res at startup then in startx?

I've got my settings perfect for HDTV when I launch X via Startx but it runs a smaller screen when it autolaunches the gentoox user login.

Since I'm still new to gentoo I'm having a hard time figuring out which settings it's using for that initial X startup.

help?

Umm yea i've run magic... immediately post magic there's 3 inches of overscan on all sides.

Oh and yes i maintained the same settings i used when doing the initial install. Which yielded 1.5" underscan on all sides.
