gentoox.xbe reporting hardrive has no mbr?

Post by pedxing »

I am having trouble loading the gentooxx.xbe file. the xbe executes just fine but brings up a loader menu that has an icon of a harddrive and one of a cd. I can ONLY select the CD icon but I have no idea why. (I installed gentoox via a stardust cd.) It says at the top that the harddrive is an unlocked fatx drive with no mbr found. Is this causing my problem or is that how all hardrives are listed?

any other ideas?

Thanks in advance!

the gentooxx.xbe is in the e:\ root directory with the rest of the files. (standard e drive install off of the stardust iso cd)

hmm strange.. if "all the other files" are there then its likely that one of them is broken...

just to be doubly sure what are the files in the root of e:

a listing of the files currently in the e: root directory:

gentooxx.xbe
initrd.gz
linuxboot.cfg
rootfs
swap
vmlinuz

(of course the savegame directories are there as well)

but thats it as far as files go.

Thanks again for the help and any tips anyone can give.
I have deleteed and re-installed several times now witht he same results. The md5 on the download checcked out just fine, the iso burned without error, but I guess re-burning the iso is my next best guess as to what to do.

I have the identical problem on my 120gb Western Digital drive. I do know my drive is locked, and yet Gentoo reports it as unlocked. I'm pretty confident GentooX has installed successfully (all 3 times I tried it).
Any suggestions?

I've encountered the same problem,I solved it by using the gentoox.xbe from Pro version and noticed that the Pro gentoox.xbe file size is different from home edition.

Strange, gentooxx.xbe looks for E:\vmlinuz. If it finds this file, the it will allow you to boot. Make sure its in lower case and is exactly "vmlinuz"

Still no luck. vmlinux is definitely on E:/. I tried different BIOS'es, different methods of launching gentooxx.xbe (Avalaunch, Evox, BIOS), and the pro gentoox.xbe. Each time, it detects unlocked hd w/ no MBR. Guess last I'll try installing GentooX Pro and try with my harddrive actually unlocked.

Any other suggestions are extremely appreciated.

gentoox.xbe reported my harddrive as having no MBR the first time I booted from the CD. It has worked on all subsequent attempts although it does report an unlocked harddrive where as mine is locked.

it reports no mbr because the xbox hard drive has no mbr. the boot partitions are defined in the bios. it says the hard drive is unlocked because it is unlocked at the time the gentooxx.xbe is launched. it is unlocked because the xbox bios unlocks it upon bootup

Well, I installed GentooX Pro with no luck. vmlinuz is definitely there...
