I have an ex-box with gentoox native installed
and last time i used the xbox i wanted to use it as a mythtv front end
1 year one I now want to use it as a low end file server with a extra hard drive
how can i remove gdm etc and stop magic installing / updating gdm xorg etc

what version of gentoox do you have on your xbox.
If you haven't updated in a while, I would suggest reinstalling gentoox Pro. Its fast, clean and easy

how do i find out what version i have . its been so long since i installed
I dont;' think i can reinstall as i don't know where the dvd drive for the xbox is any more

Something like "rc-update del xdm" should work if I recall. Been awhile =)
After you magic, it's possible that it might get re-added, but you can always remove it again. Just go through your /etc/init.d directory and make sure that any services that you don't want such as xdm aren't showing in "rc-update list" as starting in any mode.
