Re: Did I screw myself?

Can't you boot into splinter cell and load the save from there? (been a long time since I did it, so I can't remember). If you can boot into the game, why do you need the dash?

Re: External Harddrive

Short answer is no. Even if you could, it'd probably be painfully slow, as the XBOX doesn't support high speed USB. Also, I'm not sure the bios supports usb drives, much less booting from them.

Unless what you were looking for is a smaller download, in which case, I think you're SOL =/

Re: stage tarball?

The smallest one you can grab is pro. You can extract it and strip out what you don't want if you like. Then just ftp install it.

Re: Did I screw myself?

If your xbox is softmodded, then can you still boot from CD with the bios you have installed? If so, try booting the Gentoox rescue/install disk and see if you can get back to something useful.

Re: Saving changes...

What are you doing to "change net configuration" for example? If all you're doing is "ifconfig eth0 <something" then it's not expected to be kept when you reboot. When you reboot, everything is initialized from startup scripts in /etc/... For example, the network is started with ...

By "fail when dealing with the distro inside the iso" do you mean that the xbox crashed when you were trying to do an ftp install and were copying the files over? If so, that issue's been seen a lot and there's other threads on how to work around it. It's not the distro that's got issues, ...

There's existing free ones you can use, but with restricted bandwidth. Look at http://www.your-freedom.net. You can use it to do anything and it'll send it through an http proxy. It can also be used to generate a SOCKS5 proxy on the computer it's running on. Then you can just use yourself as a proxy...

You can run etc-update to interactively update your config files. However, keep in mind that it's not a fully automated process. You'll likely want to just accept the new versions of most of the files, but if you've modified anything or have any specific settings in there, you'll have to merge them ...

If all you do is play roms, listen to music and watch movies, then, honestly, don't change from XBMC. I started out wanting to set up my box for that same purpose and since I already had another box on gentoox, I automatically decided to go that route again. It ended up being too slow and too much o...

Gentoox is basically Gentoo, with the necessary modifications to run on the XBox. Gentoo is a popular multi-platform linux distribution. You can run that on your PC if you like. http://www.gentoo.org

They're USB devices, so I assume there's something odd in the way the madcatz device presents itself that the xbox drivers have taken into account but the cromwell bios ones haven't. Different ID maybe, dunno.
