I have a similar question : If i move to KDE, there is the gimp avaible. ( i remember from the last version of gentoox ) That means that The Gimp exist and it is compress somewhere. How to install it under Xfce ? Do i need to do an 'emerge' and install all dependencies ? Is there no way to 'switch'...

will it prompt me to enter my password 4 root? Yes it will, and you'll also have the option to "ignore" and continue on with as non-root. For instance for, after I installed Kportage (an EXCELLENT utility, way better than using emerge from the command line) I added "kdesu -- kportage" to my desktop...

Go into the SSH configuration section of webmin and enable X11 forwarding. It's disabled by default.

You might want to set it to only accept SSH 2.0 while you're in there too!

Trial and (many) error(s) is how I learned what little I know about Linux.

Don't be afraid to try thing, especially since the very WORST you could do is make GentooX not boot / start X. Considering the remedy for the WORST possible thing is just reinstalling... that's not bad!

I was thinking more for server or remote-only xbox usage. Even if you're using XFCE for your window manager, there's no reason to have it loaded on the console AND on the VNCd. My xbox isn't even plugged into a TV (or any controllers) right now, so I disabled starting X on the console session (VNC s...

instead of "foo" make your command line "kdesu -- foo"

You can still use KDE apps, they'll just take longer to load since none of their libraries are loaded.

Apparently, it's idiotic to choose usability over speed. Which is ironic since this is a linux distro (more usable) rather than an xbox version of FreeBSD (faster). Standing by to receive linux zealot "BSD is dead!" flames  . Fire them up! Oh, also. OpenOffice.org 1.1 text document loads in...

Standard user access to E & F drives

If I unmount f, I can chmod 777 it and it shows up as rwxrwxrwx.

However as soon as I mount it again, it goes back to the previous settings. I can find nothing in fstab or mtab that would cause this.

What should I do to allow world full access to e & f?

Oh, when something is masked that means it's unstable? I thought masked just meant it wasn't going to update then next time I did emerge -up world. Sorry for my mistake  , I only use FreeBSD & Windows in the standard PC world. Thanks for the idea about the 'Killall X', I'll add a button to tha...

I had this exact same problem when installing over top of 2.x GentooX.

Unraring the files on my PC and FTPing them over fixed me up!

Heh :D That would make a cool confirmation dialog box for when you press the ToKDE button.

Code: Select all

Only an idiot would switch from XFCE to KDE!
Are you sure you want to do that to yourself?

KDE) If you remove KDE, you remove the ability for a linux n00b to use your distro. XFree) When I did that at the console, it just kept restarting X instead of staying at the command line XFCE Menus) Why did you include the apps if they suck? Timezone) Good man! Not everyone wants GMT. It's e...

The only button you need in XFCE is the "ToKDE" one  If you (for some weird reason) don't want to use that button, you have to add each and every item by hand (YAY!) Open a terminal, run 'locate foo | grep bin'. This will find every file that has 'foo' in the path and return only those with 'f...

My requests

- OpenOffice.org 1.1 instead of 1.0.obsolete (Flash and PDF export RULE!). Emerging a masked ebuild is beyond your novice user, and the fact that 1.1 is still masked is a testiment to how stupid it is to have masked ebuilds at all. - Default tightVNC geometry size of 1024x768 with alwaysshare in the...
