Things to do before Magic

So i keep having problems with magic. Gdm failed mostly but normally tits up. What can i do before running magic to assure Magic will work.

if you do
emerge sync && emerge -uD world
first magic should run fine.
There are several packages that pretty much have to be kept up to date to ensure that emerge (which magic makes heavy use of) continues to work.
This will present you with a problem, since the release of home, most of the major packages have been updated, (KDE, gcc, glibc, XFCE, Xfree, Firefox, thunderbird etc.) recompliling all these packages will take many days. (I reckon about 4 or more).
To get round this you could do
emerge -upvD world
then only update the packages that look like they might cause problems, if you are unsure, post the list here and I'll have a guess and what you definatley need to update and what can be left out.
You could also try
emerge -uD system
although I think this will still update gcc and glibc

To be honest, I don't think any of these will cause you a problem, looks like portage has already been updated. There's loads on the list that you should think about upgrading, all the libraries and maybe gcc, but the only program on there that is seriously out of date is Samba and usually with Samba I reckon if it ain't broke don't fix it.
From whay Shallax is saying it sounds like he might be preparing a new release. A cumulative update would be cool, just the same but with magic and emerge -uD world run.

what is the specific error when gdm fails? if it is talking about your automake version, then emerge automake, then restart magic.
and wtf does tits up mean?
