Getting back into KDE

OK this is probally really basic but every time I try to use the potage system it wont let me. Im useing kde and I log out and then I log in from the command line as root. Then I use emerge sync and update the packages. Then Install the packages I want. The problem is I dont know how to get back into gentoox because ever time I boot it just takes me to the login screen in black I need to know the command to get back into the GUI opose to this black command line screen. Can anyone help me?
