Files via FTP -> Name too long?

Post by ManReal »

When I try to copy a file with a long file name. The file will not copy over to Gentoox.

For example a file like:

"some long song name - author name which goes on very long.mp3"

will not copy for some reason. Why is this? Can windows XP handle long file names that Gentoox can't ?

EDIT: ** just tested, and it won't let me transfer any file names bigger than 42 characters. While in Xp, I can have huge file names.

Note, to copy the files over, I'm simply ftp'ing the files over to gentoox from windows XP.

and they won't copy to my xbox via the evox dashboard either

Ideas?

Oh yes, and the other thing driving me insane is.. why can't a transfer a single file bigger than 3 gigs over to Gentoox through ftp?

Why is there a file size limitation? and How can I avoid it?

FatX has a 48 character filename limitation (IIRC), no way around it unless you are using a loopback install (e drive install for example) then you can use filenames that are very very long.

Im not sure about the filesize limitation, it may have more to do with the ftp application. What FTP server are you transfering the data to?

I'm using the default ftp application that comes with Gentoox. Does the swap file affect the size that the file can be? Because anything above 3-4 Gb's tend to get cut. Any ideas?

I'm confused, what exactly are you doing? the swap file is called swap, that shouldn't be too long of a file name

Actually, I'm trying to copy files into gentoox with long file names. And it isn't working.

I want to know how do I bring files with long filenames into Gentoox?
