Install Hangs [Solved]

Post by peegee »

OK, so i have tried many many things to get this resolved, and have searched the forums too. But alas its still not working.

I read the FTP install and followed the steps to a T, but the gentoox loader screen runs and just stops and then xbox flashes Red, Orange, Green over and over.

Any suggestions?

This is a xbox 1.0 with xenium ice and evox. I have a 80GB replacement drive which i used the xenium OS to upgrade.

I cant install from CD/DVD as i have the thomson DVD and its not working properly. so no matter how i burn media it wont boot off it.

any help/suggestions, would be much appreciated.

Thanks

go ahead with your ftp install. when the lights blink red, orange and green do you see anything on the screen.. before you start unplug every everything off your xbox. joystick, dvd remote sensor and anything else u have.

do you have ssh on your pc. try to get ssh installed on your pc so you can ssh into the xbox during the ftp install. that way you can do it from your pc.

OK so I tryed again with the USB RF Keys/Mouse receiver unplugged and got a little further...

Now the Gentoox loader loads ok the and lights go rogrogrog etc...
The text on the screen is as follows:

"Gentoox Loader (XBE) v5.11
Gentoox (c) ShALLax - http:gentoox.shallax.com -RAM: 64MB
Unable to get first sector
LoadFATXCluster : Out of data while reading cluster 19088743

Gentoox
Bringing Gentoo to the XBOX"

Then there are 3 icons on the screen:

A DVD, a Joystick, and the linux penguin.

Yeah, i have PuTTY on 2 other machines on the network, but unless i can ssh in while the boot loader is stopped (...i doubt the SSHd is started at that point) Its not going to help at this stage i think.

Just curious why one would use SSH for the install from a PC rather than watching the TV screen? Is there some benefit to SSHing in during the install?

Thanks

I guess i should add that i press buttons on the xpad when i see the three icons, and its then hung again.

The xbox LED at this point just flashes orange.

Thanks

flashing orange would mean its busy. busy would mean that its installing, compiling or doing something.

I dont know whats the error message you got
Unable to get first sector
LoadFATXCluster : Out of data while reading cluster 19088743
hope that doesnt affect your installation.

and you can always edit your last post to add more updates.. :)

OK, i did that yesterday - did a low level format.
So then i had planned to put it back in raw, and then get xenium OS to just format c: and drop the c: drive data back on there. but xenium hangs when i click on disk tools - ok so i think i know why.

So if the C: had have formated, i then planned to use evox to start up a CD/DVD install to e: or f:

Do you think this will work? or should i just format e: also with xenium OS and then drop the gentooxx.exe etc (FTP process) files on e: and try it like that?

What is a recommended HD formater for xbox (maybe something i can load on my PC?)

Thanks! - im sure i can get this running....with your help :-)

OK
So i formated and copied the files back over to e:
I ran gentooxx.xbe from evox and got the same error about being out of data, cluster error, and the system not loading.
It just sits there. This is driving me insane.
I have tried just about everything besides a new xBox.

Is there some PC util that i can format the drive with?

I did use the xbox HD Prepare tool to write 0s all sectors, and then formatted with xenOS.

Maybe ill just buy a samsung DVD, but if this FTP install works for others, then i have no idea why it keeps not working for me.!!!

Please let me know if you did a successful FTP install, and/or if you have seen this problem and what a possible solution is.

Thanks

OK so i tryed another HD last night - same thing.
I guess its not the HD.
Maybe its the memory? or CPU?

Does any one know of any diagnostics for the xBox?
Thanks

cluster would normally mean disk..

how are you formatting your drive, I dont it would be too legal to talk about it, but just keep it brief. Should be something to do with the way your preparing your hdd.

can you tell how much your paritions are on each drives.

yeah true, cluster would normally mean disk, but it happens to 2 different disk at the same cluster.

The first time i tried this, i formated e: and f: with Xenium OS - didnt work.
Next time i did it, i totally wiped the drive clean with the low level format using the IBM/Hitachi Drive Fitness Test util, then i prepared it with the xbox HDPrepare util, then stuck it back in.
I then formated c: and e: with xenium OS, copied the gentooxx FTP install files over to e: and tried again.
So the short answer is:

Im formating with Xenium OS.

Is there another, better util i should/could use? PM me if you think your advice/words are not public forum acceptable.

Thanks

Looking for people on the Gentoox port/development team.

Has anyone seen this out of data at cluster error i have previously mentioned?

How should one prepare a hard drive when trying to install gentoox via the FTP method?

Thanks
