Your best bet for installing software is to use Gentoo's native 'emerge' command.

Go here: http://packages.gentoo.org/ to see what software is available.

Here is the firefox package: http://packages.gentoo.org/search/?sstring=firefox

To install (update) firefox, you would

1. Open a terminal window
2. type emerge firefox-mozilla
3. get a cup of coffee

You could also look on the installation link of the gentoo website: http://www.gentoo.org/
for more information

I used emerge to update Firefox and it's taking forever. It's been installing for over two hours now.

I read something about Gentoox having to compile everything, but this is ridiculous. Does it normally take this long?

Thanks.

You can get firefox's binary by emerging mozilla-firefox-bin . Some claim that the official binary is faster to run than a home-compiled version.

PS to chilldawg: "TOTAL NOOB" isn't a good post title. Maybe something that describes your problem, no?

Thanks for your reply.

It's still compiling (four hours now). Is it safe to stop it, unmerge Firefox and emerge mozilla-firefox-bin?
