problems with magic

i have gentoox pro, and i was running magic to install xfree, kde, xfce4, xkvbd, and mplayer, and i succeeded in installing xfree on the second try and in installing xkvbd, but whenever i try to do the syncing, i get an error at the updating portage screen and when i try to install kde of xfce4 or mplayer i get an error, often at the checking dependancies step that says emerge failed, check network settings. also, when i first start magic, it says current limit is 5 kbps even though i have cable. can anyone help me out please?

· Problems installing XFCE? (Emerge failed)

1) Make sure your clock is set.
2) emerge -C virtual/modutils
3) Re-run magic.
