first time using Magic + some other questions

Post by shedt »

ok so I installed gentoox, nice stuff !

I'm using xfce, everything seems cool, but a few times my controller did not work. and once i closed the keyboard and could not get it back, and i did not shut down correctly... etc...

so anyways, xfce crashed I guess. All I would see is the sides on the panel, and there were no programs.

ok no problem, i broke it i will fix it. so i searched here and came across this command:

magic fix xfce && magic

no problem... ran this.. ah !

its working but its installing and downloading alot of stuff.

it said portage needs to be updated... ok....

I don't know what it is, I'm new to linux.

anyways it was running for like 8 hours or so, says it is done, that it needs to restart the system, then run magic again.

my questions:

if i run magic again will it take 8 hours ?

also I need to move my rootfs onto my f partition. will this take many hours ? do I have to do it with magic ? could i not just move the file over to f manually and edit a boot file of sorts ?

if i move rootfs to f, do i have to mount f first then move it ?

how can I add files to the xfce panel, like a link to the keyboard ?

i read "emerge" is to install programs. would i use the full path name ?

and last, can i manually do a native install on my g partition ? is there a big performance increase between native over using the rootfs file ?

thanks ! sorry if my questions jump around and our very broad.

-edit-

also for joyd

http://gentoox.shallax.com/modules.php? ... e&artid=60

would this take along time to install as well ?

would i just type
magic joyd

? sorry i'm new to this.

Magic only takes a long time if you are updating a lot of things (then it isn't Magic, it's emerge [then it isn't emerge, it's GCC]). I doubt it would be a good idea to not use magic to move / to F:. Magic isn't adding any extra bloat, trust me. To get help on emerge, just type

Code: Select all

$ man emerge
where ``$ '' (sans quotes) is the shell prompt. ``man'' is the manual reader. You can't do a native G: install. Native installs shouldn't be much faster than loopbacks. Joyd is not recommended for being an unstable piece of crap.

great, I guess then it took so long because it was the first time.

is there a good place too learn all the basic basic stuff, terms etc ?

would anyone be able to guess how long it takes to magic f-drive ?

hmmm, i guess i will have more questions when i get home and start fiddling with it. thats the best way to learn i guess !

i'll good read about gentoo and linux in general.

thanks again !

For information about Gentoo, PC parent of Gentoox, go to http://www.gentoo.org/. There are some very good tutorials at http://www.linux.org/ and http://www.tldp.org/.
