Printer and CUPS setup in home v3

Post by roadrash »

I am having trouble setting up a shared printer in gentoox homev3.

I cant see the cups setup page http:localhost:631 i just get an error saying it cant connect to server and to check that the cups server daemon is running. I get the same error if i try to access the printer section in KDE's control panel.

Can someone tell what I need to check/do to get cups daemon running and get the setup page upp.

have you tried
/etc/init.d/cups start
that's just a guess I don't even know what cups is but if that works you should be able to do
rc-update add cups default
to make it load on startup

i tried the command "/etc/init.d/cups start" but i just get the error "no such file or directory".
I looked in /etc/init.d and there isnt a file called "cups" but there is one called "cupsd"
"cups" stands for common unix printing system and i thought its the one that everyone uses in linux now. Its cetainly in gentoox home v3.

anyone any idea's?

Has anyone got a printer working under gentoox?

If so how did you get the cups setup interface to load (http:localhost:631)

Have a look here http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/printing-howto.xml

I am really not a Linux crack, but it works here.

ok thanks mate I just typed:
rc-update add cupsd default
then rebooted and its running the cups print server now. I still cant get to print anything yet though. I have my pc printer set up as a share and ive tested it on another pc running xandros linux and it works fine but on the xbox it sends the document to the print spooler where it sits and doesnt go to the printer for some reason but i'll keep trying...
thanks again
