desktop doesnt fit the screen

Maybe someone asked that before, but i did not find a solution.
My problem is that the desktop is too big for the monitor (a pal tv). the smallest ( and the only availableable in the setup routine) i could choose is vga.
Is there any possibility to either reduce the resolution or to calibrate the screen like in xbmc ?
