zsnes issues

Anyone using zsnes successfully with the joypad? I don't have a keyboard/mouse connected, so the joypad is all I have. I also can't get vnc going due to the recent issues with xorg-server 1.2 and xf4vnc incompatibilities.

When I start zsnes, it prompts to press spacebar. It doesn't seem to accept the spacebar from the virtual keyboard so I can't do anything besides close zsnes. After that, the mouse is defunct. The joypad presses no longer do anything. When I close X (through SSH) and restart gpm/joymouse, I can then seem to do a couple things with the buttons on screen, but the joystick is disabled.

Is there any way to completely restart/reprobe/etc the joypad/joymouse if it's screwed with or if you unplug/replug the joypad?

Anyone have any tips on zsnes and getting joypad to work nicely with it?

Apparently unplugging and reinserting the controller fixes the mouse issue (annoying as hell, but doable). Would be much easier if someone knows a fix for that.

Anyone else even use zsnes running on gentoox? I'm finding it takes up like 70% of the CPU when the game is running idle. Mario 3 is borderline unplayable (only one I've tried so far). It's pretty jerky and seems to be skipping a bunch of frames. Anyone else have the same issues or know how to improve the performance?

I know there's an xbox port zsnexbox but it's build as an xbe so illegal and unrunnable within linux (isn't it?). Dunno if it's any faster.

you can use zsnes under windows, its just as "illegal" to run it under linux and would run much better due to better hardware

It's not "illegal" to run zsnes, it's just illegal to have the roms if you don't own them. The "illegal" part is zsnexbox, which is built with the XDK.

I'm assuming zsnexbox would run much better as it doesn't have the other linux overhead. I'm considering going back to xbmc for the my front-end box and leaving gentoox only on the server as I don't really want more than movie/DVD playback and some emulator games on the frontend anyways.

Need to figure out how to recreate my C-Drive, though, as the front-end is fully native atm and I lost the C-Drive backup when my other HDD died =(

Get unleashx & burn it to a disk this can re-create all fat-x partitions with ease
then if you want to get hold of the ms dash files try here: http://rapidshare.com/files/14478719/ms-dash-mik3h.rar

Thanks blighty. Went with slayers auto-install cd and it was a breeze. Recreated the c/e/f drives and even put pretty much all the other useful apps I wanted (emulatorss, xbmc, dvdx, x2dvd, etc)
