11:00PM Clatter?

Every night at 21:00 one of my NAS’s clatters away as if it is running a check disk but I have not scheduled one. I have checked the messages file and also the cron log but I can find absolutely no record or reason for it. Can someone tell me what it is or how I find out whether it is something harmless or harmful?

is it connected to the internet, plug it off during nights and see what happens.

write a simple script to log the output of ps every few seconds from 20:59 to 21:01. See what was started up.
I think I had mysql or some such doing an update at some point in the night that I had to remove. It was in cron though, so you'd see it if it was that.
