Gentoo takes up too much space

I installed Home 3.2 and it was working fine. I ran magic and it upgraded a ton of stuff. I then unmerged xfce and emerged icewm. Still at this point everything seemed to be running just fine until I ran emerge mythfrontend. Right before I ran this I had about 44% of my rootfs left and it compiled for about 24hrs before stopping because it said I ran out of space. Is there some way to emerge stuff in a way that will take up less space I think I should be able to emerge icewm and mythfrontend in rootfs with out taking up the whole thing especially since I unmerged xfce. I can't even boot into the system now because it says I am out of space.
