720p on a DLP HDTV system

Post by fizgig »

I'm on day 2 of trying to install gentoox. After searching and finding that I had to turn off all hd modes in the microsoft dashboard to get gentoox to boot, I now see a neat 720p picture on my HDTV set but it has a lot of overscan.

Now, I've read practically every post here that discusses overscan (most times more than once) but I can't find a simple tutorial that steps through the process of calibrating gentoo using fbset. I did see mention of keeping some numbers adding up to a certain amount but it still wasn't clear what I was doing or even if that amount (total) was correct for my set.

Does anybody have a clear understanding about what all the numbers are after fbset? The help page for fbset has many arguments but I don't see a template that will tell me what each argument corresponds to when I do the "fbset -g 960 540 960 540 960 540 32 -t 29195 24 14 12 3 16 2" command.

In short, I need help. Any tutorial or guidance I can take to calibrate my screen would be valuable. Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the link. I did come across that page last night and tried that setting out (fbset -g 1280 720 1280 720 8 -t 13468 220 70 22 3 80 5) and I went from having an overscan picture to having no picture at all. As you can see from that page, the arguments aren't described much at all. The hunt continues...
