No sound control in xmms

I can (seemingly out of the blue) no longer control volume in xmms. EQ works fine, but the volume control doesn't work at all, no matter what combination of output settings I use :\ I had this problem with my PC a while back, and after emerging a new something or other it fixed itself, but I'm not sure what. I tried re-emerging xmms, but no luck

Any suggestions? comments?
