Hi, after many problems, I finally got my gentoox back up.. (dont ask, lol)
Now only 1 (or 2) remain;)
When I log out of any wm, GDM always goes insane.. lookin like a circus midget with a Rainbow Hammer smacked my TV.. (scrambled pascal colors)
I've tried to fix gmd with magic, but I havnt tried to use any other login managers... maybe I'll try kdm, or xdm?
Also.. I have no sound at all:/ heh... I've run emerge sync and magic, both say done.. so I think I'm up to date, or my box is messin with me~
Any insights:)

Yes, this is a bug which I just found out. I think its to do with the kernel framebuffer driver not reinitialising properly after Xfree reloads. I'll report it to the maintainers. As for sound, magic fix alsa && magic.

Yes, I know I should go snoop around the bugreports for Xfree but, you know, lazy and all. I was just wondering whether anyone has heard anything further here about this mildly annoying bug? ShALLaX?

I had the same problem and switch to kdm

I changed the /etc/conf.d/local.start

and remarked all lines that include gdm
and add an extra line

/usr/kde/3.3/bin/kdm

also edit the /etc/rc.conf XSESSION variable

XSESSION="kde-3.3.0"
and
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

this way I can also shutdown with the right mouse logout through KDE and I don't have to go to the menu to choose the shutdown program

Is it possible to have this as the default login manager?

No way, I spent a lot of time on GDM - its a superior login manager. If you prefer KDM - you use it ;p

Hi,

I think I've run into a similar problem when logging out, but using VNC. See viewtopic.php?t=3108
One of the things I was un-aware until yesterday was that the main display was also borked when VNC was borked (I run this box headless).

I noticed in my situation that xdm service in /etc/init.d seems to help in this regard.
Note: My version is different than the stock home 4.0 version, tho', since I emerged both gdm, and xorg-x11 to try and fix my issue.
{To be clear, the xdm service starts gdm on my box, but YMMV ;)}

So any update on the "rainbow" bug? Anybody know if the problem is supposed to be fixed yet?

Nope, no update. Pretty sure its to do with Xboxfb, but no one seems interested enough in fixing it.

hi,

same here.
if i log out or just restart gdm for any reason gdm becomes unusable :/
(remindes me of the PC-bug where the framebuffer becomes unusable while using the nvidia driver and the tv-out is activated)

back to Topic:
how can i switch to xdm as default?(and how to deactivate this virtual keyboard?)

i dont know kdm very well but i dont like kde and dunno if kdm is as slow as kde ^^

thank you in advance :)
