Educational benefit of Gentoox XBOX Linux

Post by murraykj »

I will share with all of you a recent email that i had sent to Shallax,

Hello Thomas (Shallax),

I'm sorry that i had not responded to you earlier directly,
but thanks for the implementation of the netboot.

It was only now that I actually had the chance to check the
fourms out on the site, and i had not been aware that there
was a discussion going on (-:

Anyways I'm glad to see that your christmas went well, I was
home with my family over the holidays and my sister has a
new DVD burner, So i managed to make a new copy of the
Gentoox4 Home, and reinstall it. There wasnt much in my
original install but it was from one of the early builds. I
had run Debian before on it but I liked the gentoox more.

I have gone through most of the apps and other utils for the
console, my primary interest in the Xbox was as a cost
effective computer for home use under linux. I really like
the output of the system to a regular TV it makes a nice
Video Toaster. I can see many practical purposes for the
unit other than just a video game. Specifically I like the
educational aspect and also the cost.

The other point is that bu using the Linux its a unique way
to introduce the LinuxUnix Environment which has fantastic
accademic purposes, as for young people who already have the
unit are getting their feet wet in the unix environment when
most other people are still stuck back in windows before
they may attend university and be totally green to unix.

Anyways, I've been around a while... I did a lot back in the
90's but took time out of the IT sector when I finished
School in my area of study. I'm only 32, but I have 20 years
electronics and computers behind me.

There is a need on a international level for cheap cost
effective computers. many people have televisions and with
the fonts jacked up a bit they might have a browser, and a
word processor and a bit of email. as for connectivity they
may be able to use another gateway and get online for
connectivity in a cost effective manner or free.

The Gentoox Project as such has the ability to put a Linux
computer in the hands of many for a minimal cost. Not
everyone can afford a new computer and the cost of these
units is coming down as the 360's are moving in. Kinda
reminds me of the Vic-20 and The C64 (-:

Another area of interest using the console is the ability
for IP based Video Services and the ability to watch
streams. as it has a Nvidea or Connextant Video Processor
and interfaces easily to a television set. This can have
many useful accademic purposes. as a example you could
probally watch a stream of a educational class or lecture
and then also work on your notes ect. I'm a Fan of Satellite
But Combining IP service with other types of connectivity
technology means that you can get what you want when you
want it with out geographical restrictions.

Another nice feature to add to the Gentoox is the ability to
watch Streams of various formats. At present there are 4
main types being used Microsoft Video , Real Player, And
NullSoft NSV as well as quick time ect... It would be nice
if a user could simply enter information related to a
streams location and watch it. Which is great for me because
I enjoy Foreign Language and Media Services, which are able
to be viewed via IP.

it would be nice if there was a type of GUI where you could
select and view your streams.

as a example, XBMC with Linkx has the ability to watch
streaming video and the streams can be channelized but
selection and content viewing from the browser on the set is
a bit buggy. I think that the Gentoox could do a much beter
job than XBMC.

Its great to see that we have people who have the initative
to do worthwhile things these days. The Gentoox linux
project I am sure will be around for some time.

My background with linux started back with slackware back
when linus was living in finland and it was on a fiew disks.
and a Bit of Solaris back in the late 80's and early 90's. I
think that as more people start to use this Linux your going
to see more and more users running portage.

I was going to boot up a copy of Susie, as in the mainframe
operationg environment thats what the managements using for
administration under CrayOS, and other stuff under some SGI
and other workstations, Theres stuff out for the portage
thats cool.

Anyways my friend over there, you do good work, and i am
sure that everyone who utilizes and or can understand the
concept of what your doing appreciates it.

Of all the Linux Builds for the console. The GentooX is by
far the best and most versitile of all versions for a
general operating system for the console, for the
requirements of most home users and educational purposes.

nice work, and Best Wishes for 2006

Alternate System management under Xwindows

Post by murraykj »

Just to comment and clarify a little from your above post.

Its not that the Mini's and Super systems actually run Susie, its that the tools that can manageg various system related activities run system utilities based on the Susie as the prefered os in example of the CrayOS super computing environment.

The Susie is actually recomended by Cray for their workstations as they have apps for the susie.

The nice thing about the Xbox running Xwindows is that you can also connect to various Xservers on your network and use it as a Cheap Xwindows Client.

In this way a administrator could from home monotor various functions running on another network server quite easily.

The admin could as a example have a Xbox running a xwindows client be connected to a system remotely such as a Sun Box at work, and from home on the Television set monotior various activities with out having to go and sit behing a computer or boot up the notebook while at home. They can just simply add the video from the xbox as a channel on their home television and view the output from the Xbased server app from there.

Best Wishes,
