PC internet connection with x-over cable to xbox: Solution

I made this work so I thought I'd share.
My config: 1. Win XP PC with NIC card and wireless receiver PCI card. (Internet is via 802.11g next door)
2. Crossover cable between XBOX and NIC card.
3. Shallax networking tutorial: http://gentoox.shallax.com/modules.php? ... e&artid=15

5. At this point was able to make ftp work between XBOX and PC. (Avalaunch + Qwix or LeechFTP). Could not get internet to XBOX with XP ICS.

So . . .
6. *** Installed AnalogX Proxy = Freeware. http://www.analogx.com/contents/downloa ... /proxy.htm
BINGO!

Now I use linksbox from the dash, and Firefox in Gentoo, no problem. Emerge, Magic, all work. Analogx has good documentation, is simple, and is free.

Note: Follow AnalogX simple instructions re: proxy. Also Gentoo has some info on proxy setup.

I have not tried XBOX live with proxy settings, perhaps somebody could let us know if this setup works for XBOX live.

XP ICS is not very good at NAT on an already NATed connection. Your best bet would have been to bridge the wireless and wired connections on your PC. Just select them both in network connection right click and bridge, no need for a proxy or ICS or anything else.

I did try the bridge thing, however, I admit that I did not pursue/ debug that as far as I did the other attempted connection methods. When I first did the bridge I lost internet on my PC, and at 3:00 a.m. I was too tired to deal with it any more. Next day I decided to look into proxies. Found something that worked, and now I am going to ignorantly, stubbornly, and blissfully stick to it.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, eh?!

I suppose so,

The tricky thing with a bridge is that the bridge itself is the network device, so whereas before you had one wireless card and one wired nic with seperate addresses, if you bridge the connections you only have one address, for the bridge.
