tightvnc 1.3x not working

Post by dito199 »

hi all

f.y.i.

Tried using the 1.3x version and vnc client just hanged there saying "Protocol version negotiated". Took me over an hour to realized my gentoox is not broken, rather error is due to incompatibility between versions.

This is useful information. It sounds like you were able to get TightVNC working eventually. I would like to do this, too. Could you give me some details on your installation? (What did you emerge/ install on xbox, what version are you running on PC, etc.)

TightVNC is preinstalled on Gentoox.. all you need is the latest tightVNC client on your PC. Then read the manual for Gentoox for connecting.

"Then read the manual for Gentoox for connecting" Which manual? I can't seem to find the tutorial. The reference in the 3.2 manual doesn't work for me, as there is no /etc/init.d/vnc file. I have run all of the magic patches, as well. I'm stumped.

Hi

I found this in the Manual
http://gentoox.shallax.com/modules.php? ... e&artid=90
Q) How do I connect to VNC?
A) http://xbox_ip:5800 or in the VNCVIEWER, xbox_ip:0
For my XBOX it would look like this:

Code: Select all

URL in Firefox http://192.168.1.101:5800
or

192.168.1.101:0 for the VNC Viewer

Default Password is gentoox

Yeah, I did see that. I was hoping there was something a bit more in depth. Anyway, for some reason that doesn't work for me. I'll have to keep trying. Recheck my settings and all that.

Alright, I'll keep trying. I thought there was a whole tutorial on the subject, as Shallax has this message:

http://gentoox.shallax.com/modules.php? ... cle&sid=33

"Tutorial: Fixed the VNC tutorial - it works now!!!"

Among others that seem to refer to a "VNC tutorial".

Also, in the Home 3.0 manual it says:
+ VNC preinstalled, start it with "/etc/init.d/vnc start" stop it with "/etc/init.d/vnc stop" Add it to load during bootup by running "rc-update add vnc default" or select it during first boot. The default password is "gentoox". To change this, delete "/home/gentoox/.vnc/passwd", then run "vncserver", enter a new password, then type "killall Xvnc" and start VNC as described above - do this all as user "gentoox".

but I do not have /etc/init.d/vnc. Not found. Therefore, I'm not sure how to start the server on my 'box. If I do vncserver, then do the VNCViewer on my PC I get an error, so I thought maybe either I am (1) missing a file, or (2) missing a step.

I re-installed Gentoox and chose 'yes' for all of the options during the install (Samba, ftp, etc.) Now VNC works. I believe I had chosen no to all of these the first time that I installed Gentoox.
