I finally got proftpd working on my xbox. I now have a professional quality anonymous file transfer protocol server (ftp) up and running, and it works great!
I first had to update "emerge" and then update "portage". Once that was done I was able to automatically download and install proftpd. It took we most of the weekend (I am a complete newbie to linux) to get it working. Setting up the configuration file was the hardest.
