56K Modem " External " for Vaction or On the Go I

Will an external 56k modem work?
I know they make them for USB ports which you could use the adapter for but I dont know if it would need special drivers or not.
I dont know if they make external 56k modems that have an Ethernet output or not...
If anyone has any ideas on this scenario let me know.
