Home v2.1

Post by ShALLaX »

Im currently working on homev2.1 which will have a completely updated set of packages preinstalled (basically upgrading to Gentoo 1.4 final). Are there any features people would like to see added? List them here and I'll see what I can do!

I suggested this some time ago on the old forums - but who else wants to see KDE gone in the new Home version as the default window environment?

I've been using XFCE for some time now and it's really starting to come into its own...

http://www.xfce.org

It is miles faster than KDE but it's still easy to use and the motif look means users can easily add shortcuts to apps without it getting cluttered. The only gripe would have to be that it has no desktop, but this is easily fixed by using rox-filer on top of it. (I can't seem to get it to execute after startxfce4 in /home/gentoox/.xinitrc, so I make a shortcut on the Motif called 'Desktop' which in turn loads rox with a custom pinboard.)

I can run XFCE4 on my Xbox on plain XDM which means that there isn't a logon screen and the onscreen keyboard could be autobooted by editing /.xinitrc.

A few other suggestions (bear with me Shallax, I know you'll have plenty of other things on your mind :D ):

- Mozilla Firebird 0.61 or Opera as default browsers. Firebird because of the many extensions and Opera because it's fast.
- Mozilla Thunderbird or Sylpheed for e-mail.
- Scite - a great multi-purpose text editor
- Pornview - very inappropriate name for a kickass image viewer.
- Sudo (see plug elsewhere in this forum :)
- X Northern Captain - sort of a Norton Commander proggie.
- Rox (see above)
- XNC.

And here's the if-you-have-time suggestions:

- Perhaps pre-emerge SDL libs (?)
- Perhaps pre-emerge a new WINE and WINEX build (geez I'm not asking for much am I :)
- Perhaps pre-emerge Bittorrent
- Perhaps pre-emerge netscape-flash
- Perhaps pre-download and install SUN-JDK
- Perhaps pre-emerge some XMMS plugins
- Perhaps emerge xpde - a window environment that's modelled after the DoS-friendly OS from the Redmond chaps. Development is speeding up and it might ease newbies into 'Linux'.

Two things that I would really like to see....

1) ability to mount usb drives without kernel recompiles, etc
--- this has never been possible under xbox before.

2) better support for people using VGA
--- if 2.1 can make it easier to use VGA such that the boot messages are visible and x11 can work with VGA without a lot of fuss, that would be great.

@detroit: thats why i asked about kernel 2.4.21 ;)
it has the vga routines implemented. Now lets jsut wait fpr 2.1 and after that shallax will surely include the new kernel =)

Hehehe... yeah I tried it once (an earlier version mind - 0.3.0 if I remember correctly) but it's a shame that most interface functions still don't work - like the titlebar for instance - so it won't be much good as a default window environment at this stage. Not to mention Linux users are not going to use it anyway because of their extreme dislike of all things MS :)

Have you tried XFCE yet? It has become my default window environment on the Xbox. Be sure to try it in combination with Rox-filer as it makes it complete.

To be honest, I think theres enough variety with wmaker and KDE being the "officially" supported windowmanagers. If people want to change it to their "favourite" one, they can do it themselves :P
