From what I can gather, the xbox uses Nvidia's NForce for audio. As there are no complete alsa drivers for this, mixing is impossible without an intermediate software layer.. like arts. Please correct me if I'm wrong in thinking this.
As I use XFCE, is there anything other than arts I can use, that won't devour my system resources?
Do I need an alternative to the ALSA mixer?

It seems I was operating under the false assumption that aRts was packaged with KDE. It is, however, by itself in the portage tree. On top of that, I'd already emerged it via having added "arts" into my USE flags in make.conf ages ago. It doesn't seem to be destroying my system resources as I'd imagined either. How wonderful.
Long story short; to use arts with XFCE:
emerge arts
add arts to use flags
add "artsd &" (without quotes) above startxfce4 in ~/.xinitrc
