I don't know how to do... I'll tell you in four easy steps. First open a console or xterm and log in as root (or su ) if not already done. Next you must cd /usr/src/linux to navigate to the kernel sources directory. To configure your kernel, you must make menuconfig to open the kernel configuration...

Oh, and dont ever use KDE as root, you open yourself to all kinds of hacking. Heehe, I didn't want to say that because I feel like a paranoid when I do, but since Shallax broke the ice... I agree completely. login of gentoox to have all the permisions of root This is a bad habit, and defeats the pu...

but when kedit loads it has all kinds of error messages about some sort of dcop server, So long as it loads, you can ignore those DCOP error messages. Obviously if it fails to load, you can't ignore them heehe. I tried using vi but that doesn't appear to come with the gentoox distro. Everything (we...

Umm, I had a problem similar to this and was embarrassed to discover I had depleted my available disk space on that partition :) I certainly don't know if this is your issue, but perhaps you will save yourself the headache and red face I got, should it be the case ;)

How do I reach the "APPLY" button This is a pretty lame suggestion, but can you <tab> to the correct widget, then press <enter>? I don't have KDE so I can't check for you... I had that problem in years past with a 15in. monitor and, IIRC, that solved it for me :) Good luck! how do i save ...

and do i need an x-over or straight cable connecting the xbox to the cable modem. OH... good question. Do you have both? What do you use for your PC? Use that one... I think you need a crossover to connect to your modem, as I need to jack my modem to the uplink port of my not auto-adjusting hub... ...

in theory it should work and they they dont use a PC mac address Well, that should save you some trouble. When you lsmod do you see the nvnet module? assuming yes, how about if you cat /proc/pci | grep Eth You should see something like the following; Ethernet controller: PCI device 10de:01c3 (nVidi...

Sure, qt is not kde
Sorry, didn't mean to sound pompous, not that you implied I did - when re-reading my words it seemed so :) Thought I should make the distinction between QT & KDE for the sake of newbs, since I failed to differentiate clearly earlier ;)

I know that with my cable internet service, they only "approve" one computer to be connected to the internet. They know by your computer's host name, and/or it's MAC address (the MAC address of your NIC). Wow, that would suck! What if your NIC breaks, or you change it because your new mob...

I assume there's some config file I need to , well, configure. It should already be configured correctly, your choice of window manager will not affect/depend on this file (see below). (EE) Unable to locate/open config file (EE) Error from xf86HandleConfigFile() XFree is unable to locate XF86Config...

In short it's the loopback device, Gentoox uses a loopback filesystem . If I'm not mistaken heavy disk load will cause loop0 to hog the CPU. Consult the link below for more info on LOFS... The loopback file system device allows new, virtual file systems to be created, which provide access to existin...

Xfree doesnt emerge qt afaik, mplayer does.
yep, that was the culprit :) Btw... QT isn't KDE, it's used for lots of proggies... -kde has it's own USE flag, so it's not necessarily right to expect not wanting one to preclude the same decision for the other...

If you're concerned with storage space, it might be a good idea to rm the contents of /usr/portage/distfiles beforehand. If you plan on later compressing the rootfs you will get a tighter archive, as these files (mostly) have already been compressed (and are easily replaced). rm /usr/portage/distfil...
