when you get to a text console by ctrl alt f1-6 it is ready for you to type a login name. Root's user name isn't "su root" but simply "root". "su" is just a program that logs you in as a different user in a shell, while keeping everything else logged in as you already w...

You could always just use partition magic or something and dual boot (so you have the choice of gentoo or windoze when you boot up)... As for the linux xbox apps: I think the only thing lacking is really xbconnect. There are tunnelling apps for linux, but none with a network like xbconnect.

You used the command: emerge USE="mysql apache2" emerge mod_php php I'm sure you can see the problem already: there's two 'emerge's on that line. USE="mysql apache2" emerge mod_php php is what you want. You could probably even do it without the php (I'll bet emerging mod_php woul...

'emerge amsn'

Whenever you have the choice to emerge something, it's always better to do it. That way, it's set up for your system and immediately integrated with other packages in the portage tree.

There are already a few threads on this: emerge amsn is what you need to do. MSN Messenger doesn't work properly in linux, even with wine/winex, but AMSN is a GPL replacement. It doesn't support voice chat, or video chat, or those newfangled gamey things... but it has everything else, and even some ...

Hopefully nobspangle won't need to correct me again, but I believe the D-pad switches, (HD left;CD right) and the default is HD.

We're supposed to play nice in the Newbie forum, so I'm simply going to ask you to go through your last post, and check for spelling and grammar mistakes. Perhaps when the post is readable, people will be able to help you.

mnt/cdrom does not exist
Unless you're in the root directory ('/') it's important to add the beginning slash: "/mnt/cdrom" when declaring the mount point.

Oh... guess I'm wrong again. I don't know what we'd all do without nobspangle. Thanks for clearing that up... He's probably got the problem solved already, but I'd feel bad to know he was just sitting there typing "fixpackages" again and again with no result.

That's not entirely true, Bucko. The same games that work with wine will work with winex; just nothing with more than two dimensions works on an xbox running linux yet.
For example, I've heard StarCraft works fine (there's even a tutorial somewhere on this site, I think).

It's been so long since the first post that you've probably fixed the problem and forgotten about it by now, but I'd like to add that this happened to me too. Something similar anyways; I dont remember the exact messages it was giving me. I reinstalled, but now I keep a backup of my rootfs on my PC ...

Run "fixpackages" or set it in FEATURES to fix the tbz2's in the packages directory. What does that mean? Dude... did you run 'fixpackages' like it said? If not: you've got to enter "fixpackages" (no quotes) into a console. That will run the fixpackages program, and, likely, fix...

"emerge -u world" is the command I think you're looking for: emerge -up world just displays what emerge -u world will do. With only the xbox compiling, I'd say a minimum of two or three days, athough I haven't done it myself. I did emerge -u world, but I do distributed compiling (with dist...
