It's an XBox with only 64MB of memory and you're compiling whole apps from source. It's not a nice new PC =) There's a few packages in there that take many many hours (thinks like KDE take days) to compile, so be prepared =)

Heh, good point Trevante, never thought to look that up. It's an access point, not a router. AffenJunge: Can you please describe all the connections you've got? It'll make it easier to debug. Do you have cable or DSL, and what is the modem plugged in to? Do you have a router, or just the access poin...

If your XBox is wired to your router, then WEP is not your problem. If you enable WEP, all it does is encrypt the traffic that goes across the wireless link. Since you have it wired in, it doesn't use the wireless link at all and WEP doesn't affect it. The problem is probably with either the cable y...

I'm assuming you've set up a wireless access point connected to the net and then put a USB wireless network card on your XBox, correct? If your XBox doesn't have a wireless card connected to it and isn't using wireless to connect to the internet (ie. is plugged into the wireless router using a cable...

If your mom's last bill was $1500, then she's got a grow op or something in the basement and she's trying to pawn off the high bill on you =) Xbox box won't use much less electricity than your normal PC and neither of em should cost more than $10 or $15 a month to run 24/7.

(Sorry for the bloated post =) Describe your network connections. ie. is your cable modem (or dialup or dsl or whatever) plugged directly into your xbox, or is it plugged into a router or switch first? Or is it plugged into your PC and then your PC is using ICS to share to your xbox on a second NIC?...

I still have crap network speeds with mine, and I run 2.4 kernel still. I used to get 800-ish KB/s and then during the course of screwing with my DNS/DHCP settings on my PC that I test against, I started getting closer to 3MB/s or so. Once I was able to get 10-11MB/s using windows command line ftp c...

The only reason you need to "open" a port is if you have a firewall that's blocking it. If you haven't manually installed a firewall, then you don't have that problem cuz gentoox doesn't come with one. 27735 isn't a port that would be used by anything unless you installed something yoursel...

If you want to play PC games with your modded controller, then it's gonna be pretty hard to do if you're running linux, and If you want to play xbox games on your PC, then it's gonna be pretty hard to do without any of the xbox hardware or OS. Thus there's no point in installing gentoox on a pc (not...

I'm pretty sure gentoox doesn't have a firewall enabled by default. I installed shorewall after the fact and don't remember uninstalling anything (but that was quite awhile ago). However, if you want one, you can install shorewall (fairly decent one) and then enable the ports (or forward them on to ...

Thanks orochi, but those just give me specs. I'm looking more for user experience. Is general usage of xfce (opening apps, doing basic stuff), compiling, etc, really sped up that much by the 128MB or is it only worth it if you have the $30 to spend on the chips? Found a site that sells em for $30 US...

Yeah, I agree, Shallax is a slacker, all he's done is put together this wicked linux distro and sit there and service all of the bugs, problems, requests, posts as much as he can and after doing only that, he has the audacity to have a life of his own on the side. He should give up all of his own pe...

If you can connect to the net with ANY app from your xbox, it's not a cabling issue, so stick with the one that works for something (straight through, I'd assume). As for DHCP in Gentoox. I thought it was dhcp by default, but if it's set up as static on your box, you probably want to check out /etc/...

I'm also not familiar with DC++ or EMule, but you'd have to find a client that runs on linux. If you can get that part working, then you can just use VNC over the internet to control your XBox and run whatever apps you want. Gentoox comes with VNC installed and it has a web interface. If you have fi...
