I'll give the gentoo forums a try as you said. I just thought that this might be a gentoox specific problem cos of the xboxes sound chip not being a recognised component. Perhaps you can tell me which sound system does gentoox & the xbox use. OSS or ALSA ?

When KDE boots it plays the startup sound and then a little later it plays it again and then just at the end of the boot it displays an error screen:

error while initialising the sound driver

device /dev\dsp cant be opened (device or resource busy)

is this error a problem or do I just ignore it.

once you have installed gentoo linux onto your laptop you will have all you need to start installing software using the "emerge" command. go to http://www.gentoo.org/ and you can get all the instructions you need to install it.

I cant remember how long it took me but its a very very very long time. I kept thinking the xbox was stuck in a loop or something then i just left it running for days and when i went back to ckeck it it had finished. it takes over 2 (maybe 3) days and nights from what i remember.
