just checked: mine boots without any connectors (power obviously ) must be that you are using the font hack dude

as long as you backup your UDATA you could just format e: like ShALLaX said.. its probably the easiest way

the USB lockup happens to me too but only if i have a xpad plugged in .. its just one of those things

im on a 1.2 board cromwell bios 800x600, 2x usb ports (replacing ctrl pad 3+4) ...

there are too many variables to pin it to one so i just unplug the controller
