What is taking up so much space?
Hi, I am having trouble understanding what is taking up so much space on my Gentoox? I have a 4GB loopback file, with nothing on it other than X, the Kernel, Fluxbox, Samba, Proftpd Mplayer - Mplayer's codecs, and the basic compilers and tools (although these have been updated) that came with the sh...

Hi, I tried this method - but after I mount the image, I don't seem to be able to ping anything. (I can't do emerge sync). Is this because my network settings have somehow changed? If so how do I enable networking? If config says: linux1 / # ifconfig Warning: cannot open /proc/net/dev (No such file ...

Well I already thought of mounting the lopback file system and chrooting. But I wasn't sure if it was possible. Anyway i found out how to use distcc on my own - so i am not just the irritating n00b you seem to think I am. I am newish to Gentoox - but not to Gentoo which I have used for 3 years (prio...

How to install masked packages?
Hi I read this tutorial on how to install masked packages: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=3&chap=3. Unfortunately I don't have any of the files it mentions in /etc/portage. I only have three files there called .keep package.mask and a folder called 'sets'. I want to ...

Upgrading to Kernel 2.6xx on a loopback install?
Hi, is it possible to upgrade to a 2.6xx kernel when Gentoox has been installed on my E partition as a loopback install? If so, how can this be achieved? Does anyone have any tips or instructions for doing this? (i can handle the kernel compile - it's how to install the kernel on a loppback install ...

Edit: resolved this issue by installing ALSA OSS Package and selecting OSS sound out in LastFM player - now lastFM player plays natively! I still would welcome advice on getting digital sound working though.... > Speaking of LastFM player can anyone actually get it to work too? >http://www.last.fm/d...

No Digital audio?
Hi, I am really impressed with Gentoox, it is a terrific piece of work. However I installed Gentoox on my xbox, so that I could listen to LastFMplayer on a very quiet system with full digital audio support. Unfortunately digital audio support seems to be non functioning. This is a major set back - a...

Man this is taking forever! Getting old fast!
Hi I was contemplating doing an 'emerge system' on the Xbox - however after installing sveral basic apps - and this taking nearly 6 hours to complete, I was wondering if there might be another way? For example, I have another much faster PC - so would it be possible somehow to quickly and easily pas...

Yes I know what gentoo is about. I used it for about 3 years prior to using Debian - which I have now used for two years. What put me off then though was the long compile times. AFAIK (since I never used any binaries in Gentoo in the past and simply do not know) it is possible to use binaries - and ...

How recent is Gentoox?
Hi, when was the last version of gentoox released?
The home page appears to imply that the last version was released on the 23-Aug-2003 (or at least it says 'added on the 23-Aug-2003'. is gentoox really that old - or is that just the last time the web page was updated?
