what error are you getting? a dialog box with the message "XFCE - Panel has crashed unexpectadly" or dump to console with segfault?

have you read up on alsa?

xfce has no desktop icons... i too searched this one out... its so that the desktop does not have to be mapped as a new usage surface that is very rarely used (just using ram)... just put more in your panel if you need to have quick access

you can just restart that particular service instead of a full reboot (the reboot will restart the service for you) there should be no need to reboot after updating a service unless you are using an inferior os
