The password is xbox. When you type, it doesn't show anything on the screen as a security feature. You wouldn't want someone looking over your shoulder to see your password.

I think ssh stands for secure shell. It allows you to connect to the xbox and remotely administer commands to it. This is helpful for people who run servers on their Xboxes, and don't really need to have a UI, or don't want to go to their TV to change their settings. Anyways, if you're on windows, t...

For the installation, I believe you have to use a composite (480i) connection. I recommend you load the installer, then ssh in and follow the install from there. Alternatively, you could just do an ftp install.

Do you have a 1.6? If so, you're experiencing the unavoidable overscan problem which happens on 1.6's. The only way to get rid of it is to run your Xbox it in 480p mode. Apart from that, there isn't a fix for the overscan on 1.6's (yet?)

Hmm...well I can't really answer your question about magic and upgrading, but if the d-pad doesn't work, you should still be able to use the analog stick.

I hear Perplexer from Xbox-scene is a great guy to do business with, although I think he charges more than Friendtech, but I'm not sure.

Yes that would work, although if you mess up with hotswapping, you could end up needing a modchip and a new HDD. I recommend you get a used memory card (or if you have a USB stick that might work), an exploitable game (I got my used copy of Splinter Cell for a whopping $6.50 USD), and an action repl...

You havent' been looking hard enough then.... UXE works on all Xboxes. My 1.6 is softmodded and it works just fine.

And no, that expoit you linked to won't work with your 1.6. Doesn't matter though, it's old and you shouldn't be using it regardless of what version Xbox you have.

More specfically, Gentoox is an Xbox adaptation of the Gentoo Linux distribution. You can find out more about gentoo at http://www.gentoo.org.

A softmod will be best for you if you don't want to solder or spend money. Go to the XBE exploits of the Xbox-scene forums, they'll help you more there. As far as the softmod failing, UXE+NKpatcher10 + virtual C drive + virtual eeprom = virtually indestrucatble (unless you for some reason start mess...

I think you have just gotten lucky because realistically, most people are having problems before Gentoox even actually loads. I think it has to do with Gentoox loader having trouble reading the eeprom, but I'm probably wrong.

Yes, the fatx file system is limited to 42 characters in a file name. There was someone who managed to get around the 42 character limit, but I don't think it was very simple, it would probably be easier to rename the files. There are quite a few file-renaming programs at Xbox-scene.

You can install lirc and use the Xbox remote with that. There's an xbox remote config file on the lirc website somewhere, I don't remember the link.

hmmm... make sure there is a linuxboot.cfg in your E drive (and make sure it's all lowercase). That's all I can think of. You could also try xromwell to load Gentoox.

The only time it will format anything is if you choose a native install (when booting from the CD). Otherwise, nothing is formatted with the ftp, e, or F installations. Please search next time, this has been covered a lot.
