In short: No. Since Gentoox and Ed's use much the same kernel, the bootloaders are compatible. I simply changed the boot.cfg entries to gentoox's defaults. Sorry, but I'm not about to write a "HOWTO" on this, it's messy and I don't have the time. For the experienced hacker, knowing what wa...

I thought "Ey" was Canadian for Eh, Meh, Feh, Keh, and various other international forms of communicating a brain fart? I once asked a friend of mine who had lived in Toronto for a few years, what Canada was like. His reply: "It's like The US, only cleaner, colder, and things cost mor...

Eh, thanks, I did notice that /usr/src was populated since I had to move it to another filesystem for space reasons. I was hoping for a cheatsheet somewhere, instead of having to dig through the kernel config file. :P

Sorry, the "Protocol Mismatch" should happen when you press return after the OpenSSH header. Is it disconnecting immediately? If so you may have a certificate problem.

Oops. Sorry, but this getting a bit beyond a simple reply! OK, if you're sitting at your Gentoox xbox with a USB keyboard: Press cntrl-alt-F1 to get a text login screen log in as "root", password "xbox" to see if the ssh daemon (sshd) is running: type: " /etc/init.d/s...

Me Too.

Closely followed by "emerge kportage" since I'm not that familiar with Gentoo

IMO Putty is a PITA. Check out: http://www.ssh.com/support/downloads/secureshellserver/non-commercial.html It's ssh's product without PKR free (as in beer) for non-commercial use. It has great Windows integration, especially tunneling and file transfer. It's not for the security paranoid, since no s...

NTSC Xbox. NTSC Projection TV, that doesn't understand PAL, so I'd expect it to be rolling as well as B&W. xbvset stuff is set NTSC. Where is the mode for the console set? My linuxboot.cfg contains: kernel vmlinuz append root=/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part2 devfs=mount kbd-reset xbox=hdd ...

Mechinstaller

For that fresh, unhacked hardware feeling.

I transplanted Gentoox after using the Ed's Debian Live system and it otherwise runs fine. I've also uploade the Mechinstaller game saves to the Action Replay site, so no hardware hacking required at all. The PSO USB adapter works great as well.

VI in the distro

Nano is nice and all, but this old school UNIX hacker doesn't feel at home without vi. Even in Home I think it still has a place.

EMACS is not an editor, but a religion... :P

tightVNC

instead of VNC for the VNC tutorial. The Windows client's good, and the JPEG compression is great over slower links. AFAIK it's completely compatible.

Shades of Grey in the Text Console & upping the res

Am I the only one that has no color in my text console? I have the same problem with Ed's Debian, except that Xfree has the same issue, At least Gentoox's Xfree is in color. I'm using the HD AV connector to my projection TV, and I suspect this may be a clue? :? Running 800x600 has really made me not...

Yup. /etc/modules.autoload was the problem. Gave up on the KDE build, it was taking *WAY* too long. I dumped down Home 2.1 and installed it into my mutant filesystem collection. One quick modification to fstab and an "emerge vi" and I'm a happy camper. This old schol UNIX hacker likes his ...

OK, I think that was it. diff on the /etc/modules.autoload: <paste> 1c1,2 < # /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time. --- > # /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4: kernel modules to load when system boots. > # $Header: /home/cvsroot/gentoo-src/rc-scripts/etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4,v ...
