There are working usb 1 solutions, the main issue as i understand it with xbmc was having to write their own low level usb drivers for such a device, i would imagine a linux derivative would make the task more approachable.
If you want a gui to look at the mysql database and you are on a windows box via network give Navicat a try, might make things easier for a beginner. But as said above you dont need to set up the tables for those, just a database instance. The included docs with both cover it in great detail.
