DHCP issue.

Here's an interesting problem. Every once and a while, gentoox boots without recieving an IP from my dhcp server. Actually this happens often, maybe 25% of the time I boot up. I have 5 other computers on my network and they have never had trouble getting an IP. The issue is easily resolved by doing ...

Stopping gdm/X from restarting?

When I logout (or kill X), I want to go to the console and not have X restart. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks for all the great work thusfar, I just switched over to Icewm, emerged the latest gaim, compiled firefox 0.9.3 myself, and am very pleased.

GDM Question before I run magic

can GDM be easily disabled? I don't particularly care about security on my xbox and would rather not have to login.

If the xbox is defaulting to 192.168.1.13, set your laptop IP to 192.168.1.1 or something similar. This should let you connect.

It also should be noted that manually running dhcpd works after startup 100% of the time

One of my major confusions is /etc/conf.d/local.start

Why is this file needed when you can use /etc/runlevels/?

I'm having the harded time getting vnc to load at startup. (I fucked with it when I couldn't connect a while ago and now it's not loading anymore at all)

Explanation of startup system/scripts needed.

So I think I understand /etc/runlevels. By adding scripts in here, they load off the startup scripts found in /etc/init.d/ But how does /etc/conf.d/ play into that? But then, what do all the hidden files in the home directories do? like .vncstart. Does this get called automatically or does another f...

Also, where can I go to find more info about this load failure or to see why dhcp sometimes doesn't work? I tried looking around in /var/log/ but couldn't find anything useful.

Failed to load snd-intel10x0

I get this [!!] error at startup. My dashboard always gives me the ip of 192.168.0.103 but when i load gentoox for the first time, dhcp fails and i get 192.168.1.3. But simply rebooting the xbox and loading gentoox again it will give me the right ip (but snd-intel still fails)

Any ideas?

VNC password issue.

First off, great work! I've been using gentoo for a long time and figured I should give it a try on the xbox. Install went flawlessly, had no problems at all. However, there's one issue I can't figure out. I can connect via vnc, but it doesn't accept the password. I even tried running vncpasswd to c...
