You are correct, however the point i'm trying to make is that we are trying to get away from that whole "loopback filesystem". Having a 100% native installation using a distro that is, for all practical purposes, the most compatible seems to make more sense. Well, that was what I did, it'...

Just so I understand you correctly, if I take my gentoox pro hard drive out of one of my xbox's and slap it in a computer, it will boot up? This is kind of embarrassing for me but I did not know that! I never saw any documentation about it so I just didn't think it was possible. EDIT: We are...

By "proprietary" I mean that little magic script. I prefer to use more standardized processes. I was never really a big fan of Gentoo and the emerge/portage deal. I prefer to do everything manually to keep my Linux machine nice and trimmed. Yea, you won't see me using a GUI to get around ...

Let me preface this by saying that we didn't do this for people who just want to run linux as an app to play around with. What we've done is intended for serious people looking to run a powerful Linux server on an inexpensive platform. We needed to stay away from the proprietary xbox linux builds a...

Welcome to native-land. My business partner and I have successfully installed Fedora Core 100% native on the xbox and are using it for our production environment. We didn't like the fact that the "native" install with gentoox was still using almost 5 gigs of dead space that couldn't be us...

your computer isnt gonna draw that much more power than your power supply is rated, a fridge/freezer ususaly (even if its not power eff.) runs like $250/year Yeah, but still, I'd like to save a little where I can, and another reason to use my Xbox to download stuff (Debian is HHUUGGEE!! is that it'...

If your mom's last bill was $1500, then she's got a grow op or something in the basement and she's trying to pawn off the high bill on you =) Xbox box won't use much less electricity than your normal PC and neither of em should cost more than $10 or $15 a month to run 24/7. Well, not all of those 1...

thank you for the quick response. i understand what you're talking about now with the live-cd. i thought you ment you were making a live-cd that was focused specifically for gentoox. but i understand you're just talking about the gentoo install live-cd. i was originally going to use my old pc as th...

@ Tsuroerusu i was wondering if you ever made the gentoox-for-xbox-livecd you were talking about and if it worked. i'm still in the early learning stages of linux so the simpler the better. I want to make my 3rd xbox a linux only file server with the least amount of hassle. any further help you cou...

I think a nice 300 gigger would be good...any problems with that? Presumably as its a second device there are no problems with any size. Pros/cons or reiserfs versus ext2 or ext3 also for this drive? From what i understand...any of these are better than NTFS! If you want to put a 300 GB drive you w...

Re: XBox as a DVR

I was wondering if there was anyway of turning my XBox into a dedicated DVR and adding something like Freevo or something similar. I know there are USB tuners out there but does anyone know if there are linux drivers for any of these tuners and if it can even be done. I dont care about playing game...

ShALLaX wrote:Right, there is no point. And since we cant even get bugfree fatx drivers - do you REALLY want a fatx defragger? ;)
And why even bother? Whenever I think my FATX drives are fragmented like crazy I just move all my stuff over to my PC and format the drives and pull my stuff over to the Xbox again.

wow that's sounds very hard to do. The only thing I know how to do is partition the drive with fdisk on my windows computer. It's very simple. I like to partition the drive in a PC using a standard x86 Gentoo LiveCD, I find it a bit of a pain to swap drives in the Xbox. Whenever I partition my Xbox...

Did you do it by doing a normal native install then copying the files to a directory in your main PC, then repartition/format the drive and place the files in the new proper partitions? Or did you trick the installer to use the partition scheme you use? I just extracted the rootfs from the RARs/ISO...
