How to mount more space?
Hi I know this is an old one - and really all I should have to do is run 'magic newfs' however (possibly because my Gentoox is a slightly older version, though perfectly stable, so no need to change it) unfortunately magic has stopped working - or at least when it tries to download the newest versio...

Can anybody remember the name, or how to use it? Why would Gentoox not have it installed by default anyway in such a space limited system? Letting the log files grow out of control like this on such a space limited system doesn't make much sense. Alternatively, can I safely uninstall my logger? If s...

Massive logging activity?!?!
Hi, after every 3 or 4 reboots, I get multiple error messages that several modules have failed to load because there is 'no more space left on the disk.' I quickly uncovered that this was because there were several huge 700MB+ log files in /var/log. How can I prevent this excessive logging behavior ...

OK I don't know what did it, but among the various things I read there, it seems I did something that finally allowed Samba to compile. So thanks for that. However now I have a slightly different problem. You see I have an MP3 player (Archos 100GB) attached to my Xbox, which works as a harddisk unde...

Can't cleanly start NFS.
OK I'm having no luck at all with networking. I don't seem to be able to cleanly start NFS. I emerged NFS utils and did the following: # exportfs -ra /etc/init.d/nfs start * Starting idmapd... [ !! ] * Exporting NFS directories... [ ok ] * Starting NFS daemon... [ ok ] * Starting NFS mountd... [ ok ...

Can't Emerge Samba!!!
Hi, I am trying to upgrade to the latest version of Samba - but when I try 'emerge --pretend samba' I get the foillowing error: emerge --pretend samba These are the packages that would be merged, in order: Calculating dependencies... done! [blocks B ] <=x11-base/xorg-x11-6.9 (is blocking x11-misc/ut...

Thanks man that was really helpful. I followed the advice here: modprobe usb-storage modprobe scsi_mod modprobe ide-scsi modprobe sg modprobe sr_mod mkdir /mnt/usb mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb And that worked brilliantly. I still have a few questions left though. Firstly how do I make sure that these mo...

How to mount a USB harddisk/media player in Gentoox?
Hi I know the USB on the Xbox is only 1.1 - but that is still sufficient for my needs. You see what I want to do is mount my 100GB fat32 formatted MP3 player in Gentoox and then use my laptop and a wireless network adapter to send files to it. So far I have the networking set up perfectly, I can con...

ProFTPd Not Writable?
I wonder if anyone can help explain/fix a couple of odd things I have found? Firstly everything works pretty great. No major hassles no worries - which is a revalation for a Linux install. (Most Linux installs take a lot more work). Anyway the thing is there are only tow small snags I have enocounte...

Some major security fixes for a start. 2.4.22 is so full of holes you could fit a jumbo jet through it. Anyway apparently we are back to the same old question... It doesn't seem that magic does update to anything higher than 2.4.22 on a loopback install - it might do it on a native install - but it ...

OK, thanks. Maybe I will just knock 2.6x on the head and forget about it. What about 2.4.32? Can Magic handle installing this in a loopback install - or is there something else I must do? I still seem to be booting a 2.4.2x kernel even after doing a magic update. Again if there is a tutirial coverin...

Lol sorry. Although I don't think it's rude when it is easy enough to post a link if you are going to expend the time and energy posting anyway? In any case as I said, thanks very much for the tip. Unfortunately that script is very old - if I ran this it would probably try to install a 2.6.11x kerne...
